The4Ways Performance Psychology

The4Ways to the top of the mountain

A healthy and productive mindset can be developed in the same way as a healthy body, and just as physical exercise contributes to physical performance, so psychological exercise can help you achieve your Optimum Performance State. Mental fitness helps us to deal with challenges by increasing our ability to self-reflect, maximise our capacity to focus and concentrate, and strengthen our emotional stamina, reducing the risk of stress and burnout.

The4Ways performance programmes will help you:

  • Develop motivation and purpose
  • Build a mentally fit, effective performance mindset
  • Understand how psychological and emotional factors affect performance
  • Learn to recognise unconscious performance blocks and reduce their impact
  • Develop confidence
  • Develop focus and concentration

What are The4Ways?

The principles of mental fitness development mirror those of physical fitness. The key elements of physical health and well-being are strength, stamina, balance and flexibility.

  • Psychological strength describes the development of cognitive and emotional ‘muscle’, the ability to carry weight, bear psychological burden and remain solid in challenging situations.
  • Mental stamina is the ability to persevere when things are difficult or uncertain.
  • Psychological flexibility refers to the ability to accommodate change and be adaptable when faced with life’s challenges.
  • Balance refers to the ability to create stability based on internal psychological movements in response to external influences.

To develop a performance mindset, we need to set aside time to condition the mind just as we condition the body. Conditioning refers to the creation and maintenance of positive psychological attributes. That is why I have come up with The4Ways model. It reflects two decades of experience, learning and trying things out. If the mind and the body are integrated, then the same principles of fitness must apply.
